It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Prom season! For a lot of girls this means spending hours with friends getting their nails done, their hair styled, their makeup on point, and of course, finding their perfect dresses. But for anyone who’s ever wandered into a Macy’s, that perfect dress often comes attached to a less than perfect price tag. So, how do we avoid spending $200 dollars on a dress only to show up to find that *gasp* Stacy’s wearing it too?
Abby’s Closet is a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure every girl get’s their dream prom dress. Their 13th annual event will be held March 18th and 19th at The Oregon Convention Center. As someone who has experienced this event myself, I can tell you – It is completely worth it. Contests, raffles, and free dresses? What could possibly be better?
That being said, there are some things I would definitely recommend in order to make the experience as amazing as possible.
Firstly and most importantly, bring friends!
I went with two of my best girlfriends and believe me, It made the experience way more enjoyable. Prom is all about having fun and letting loose, and who better to do that with than your besties?
Secondly, and I cannot stress this enough, show up early. The dresses go quickly, and once people start showing up, the wait can get pretty long. Make sure to bring your student ID card and some patience.
Whether or not you bring friends, you should bring something to keep you occupied. This is something we didn’t do, and totally should have. Coloring books, playing cards, and a good book are all great ideas. The estimated wait time can be up to a few hours, so you could even leave to grab a coffee and explore the city.
Lastly, some girls find their dress instantly, for others, it may take a bit more searching. Try not to be discouraged if you don’t find what you’re looking for right away. You will. A lot of the best dresses are diamonds in the rough, you’ve just gotta dig a little.
So, if you’re thinking about going, let me be the one to give you the push. It’s definitely worth the time, the volunteers are funny and sweet, there’s tons of chances for great prizes, and there’s no worrying about somebody showing up to prom in the same dress as you!
